Ready ... Aim ... Ready infoworld.com

I had to hop over to infoworld to check up on Robert X, and noticed he apparently has a brother Al. This is last weeks column, about Apple, which is somewhat off topic except in, uh, this context.

On the surface it would appear Apple is in one of the best positions they've ever been in. The public hates Microsoft like never before. The Apple ad campaigns are back to marketing image. The new hardware seems strong and many of the stupid parts of the Mac OS are being removed and retooled.

But there's no way Apple can capitalize on it.

Remember, in August Steve went to great pains to show just what great pals he and Bill Gates are when Microsoft gave Apple a financially insignificant, but psychologically important, sum of money. So, now that the government and a large part of the public are grabbing torches to chase after the Frankenstein monster of Microsoft, Apple can't. Instead, it has to stand back and back say, "Oooh look at all the pretty lights," as the rest of the maniacs go climbing up the castle parapets.

And that has got to be just as frustrating as hell.

Steve, we hardly knew ye.

Cheers, Dan, your maniacal NOISEY ilkoid correspondent.
