Its befuddling to me that we ever need to get in to rathole discussions like this.
Science is based on a method, that DEFINES us, The Scientific Method. It was revolutionary when it was adopted, it is the expression of our freedom and foundation of our liberty in reason and thought. It is the basis of dynamism necessary to our competitive advantage in the Global marketplace.
It is not a religion, a fixed end-state, or a destination.
Evolution is a fact that is constantly passing every Scientific Method test thrown at it. Nevertheless, there are always scores of new wonderful unanswered questions to answer about when and where things took place, but not about the reality of Darwin's paradigmatic discovery.
Science and reason requires 2 assumptions, as I see it.
1) This is a real world 2) We can influence it as human beings (for better or worse) cause-and-effect.
I realize that many people do not believe these assumptions, primarily because they are told so. Some don't even give it a thought, though it rules their lives.
Some with good intentions try to bridge the two worlds, for example making religious symbols out of "singularities" or "intelligent" design -- not unlike seeing Jesus in the Shroud of Turin -- but again the best I can do is remember good fences make good neighbors for IMHO without those two assumptions we are doomed to be ruled by fear and myth, not reason.
Even though many are still living in the 4th century by philosophy, I'll continue to bring them food when they are sick and hungry, or help them when their cars don't start. And I'll argue, with spirit, when they come for debate in hopes that the open minded ones with courage, will rebel against the shadows cast and see the light of reason. |
