[Software and Chips]
Hi Pat,
A pretty pertinent article appeared on the CUBE thread today (Credit to Fieb) about the changing nature of the chip industry.
In December's issue of UPSIDE mag, which is a "Hot Chips" issue,(No feature stories on CUBE, sorry) there is an interview with an Dado Bonatao. He founed Chips and Tech, S3, Mostron(?), He won an award "Master Entrepreneur of the Year",.... here is the last paragraph of the interview...

What does the future hold for the chip business? Like any other industry, there are structural changes in how companies should be formed to be successful. In the old days, you just had to be a damn good chip designer because the functions that we used to do were minor. It's well-defined, so you hook up a lot of these nice chips to make a system. In the old days, device physics was your added value. Over the years, things have changed. Traditional chip-design problems are becoming system problems. Since [C&T] started 13 years ago, there have been significant changes. You now have to be able to do software, a lot of system-level software. You need to understand applications.
During the next 10 years, I think the issue with most semiconductor companies is that they will have to be good in algorithms. Keep in mind, this is all additive. You still have to know how to design a chip, you have to have good understanding of the system, you have to know what goes with that system in terms of software, and now you add algorithms to that......
