Those are top tier cruise lines. I remember my Dad complaining that the cruise ship we were on didn't measure up to the Holland America line. The problem was, Mom and Dad footed the entire bill for the cruise, which included their four children's families, Mom's sister and her husband, an old family friend couple--It must have been over 20 people altogether. Mom had to keep it within her budget, which still shocked Dad.
I really had no complaints about the cruise itself, except I didn't think housekeeping in our cabin was good. When we got there the shower had a wad of hair stuck to the drain. There was a big midnight banquet which had a ton of food out on tables including a butter sculpture and various seafood dishes. That's where I think Dad got the bug.
I'm am too much of a grinch to really enjoy cruises. I don't cotton to arranged activities all that much, such as phony horse races that you can bet on. I just want to be left alone.
My idea of a good cruise is the Alaska Marine Highway. It's not lavish by any means because it is transportation, not entertainment. The staterooms are tiny, but there are plenty of places to sit inside and out. In fact if you're on a budget you can bring a pup tent and sleep outside under the solarium. Lots of people do that, mostly young people, but I would have no problem with it. One time a gospel group entertained in the forward observation lounge where I liked to hang out. I enjoyed it for about 30 minutes, but they went on and on. I finally got up and left.
