I think the elderly are diligent voters because they've learned what it takes to be good citizens and take responsibility for what happens to them.

Moreover, nobody can fault them for voting accordingly knowing that they followed all the rules for their entire lives only to be screwed by the government when they are unable to change course.

I don't get Social Security but I get a federal pension. I didn't choose my line of work to get it, I chose it because I loved the line of work and would have chosen it whatever the rules were at the time. My federal pension is not part of the welfare state, it is the result of a contract between me and the federal government in which I fulfilled all the requirements and now the government better damn well fulfill its obligation to me.

George Will is getting more and more cynical, and he's really starting to piss me off.

And because the welfare state is so good to them, the elderly are unusually diligent voters and are especially apt to vote on the basis of protecting their benefits.
