Didn't AMD offer "free" CPU's and didn't get many "takers"? Wonder why ??!!

Yes, they did offer ~ free product to HP. It seems HP already was using Some product from AMD, the max brass butt would allow through rebates (at the time HP was not privy to the Dell $$ amount, but they are now, now everyone knows). Dell OTOH used none. If you were to compare volume and rebate data from those times (you wouldn't want to), you would find Dell received multiple times the rebate dollars with similar volume of parts.

The stink Intel left in the air at HP is why HP has been wanting out of the PC business, you'd know that if your blinkers had ever slipped.
