"The one exception I take with you is on the energy issue. I too encourage energy from all sources; but since oil is a finite energy source and all the easy clean oil has been gotten, I favor moves towards other sources. Conservation, wind, solar, tidal, natural gas and of course nuclear."

Thank you for your response. After I posted it I went swimming and had an extended time to think further about what I had said - swimming is BORING!

Two things - first, I am firmly on the record for an "all of the above solution". Second, we are talking about a nation whose supposed current priority one - I have heard Obama say it many times - is jobs. It is most ironic that one of the current hot sectors gaining in employment is the oil and gas industry. Would it not be something if unemployment statistics save his sorry butt with a large contribution from the energy industry.

Finally, I would again like to talk about Tau. Tau is the symbol for the time constant of a system. In other words - it takes a long time to turn a battleship - as it takes a long time to change the energy use patterns of a large system like our country. (Of note - I recently had an extended off line discussion with Koan on this subject as he was berating me as to how the left is so dedicated to science - of note he never had heard of Tau. I doubt most lefties have heard of Tau and have a hard time distinguishing between what is doable in a test tube vs what is doable in a commercial process. But I digress.)

Our nation has net oil imports of approximately 8 million bbls per day of oil. At a hundred bucks a barrel that is a bleed of $800 million per day from our economy. Since our number one priority is supposedly jobs (something I do not think is even close to Obama's number one priority) it would make sense to displace as much of this 8 million bpd while in the meantime embarking on the long process of reducing our consumption of oil.

The lying rag called the New York Times recently had an op ed against Keystone saying we should focus on renewables. Of course the idiots did not mention that Keystone would be all private money - or - that the economic activity from Keystone would help provide tax revenue for their green dreams. As such - Keystone would not have an iota of negative impact on future green energy (but their audience of sheep will not think that far). I doubt there is a single idiot at the NYTs that has any concept of Tau. They are simply the official print organ of the Democratic party - much like Pravda. But again I digress.

One final thought. I see some merit in a future effort to bail out the states much in the same manner as Greece is going being bailed out. Any such effort should be on the basis of massive restructuring of fiscal obligations of the states to their public workers and their pensions. The last payoff did not require any concessions - in fact as I cited - some actually used the money for raises. In many ways the only change Obama brought was who loots the treasury.

We need to restructure much of our nation and the restructuring process will be difficult. As you have said - Paul is the only one seriously saying that - too bad he is such a flake.

Bob

PS: If I were voting in New Hampshire tomorrow I would vote for Huntsman.
