OT - As a weekly grocery shopper, I've witnessed a long trend of double inflation. Not only have I watched the prices rise on items, but we are getting hit with the hidden inflation of less product. Folks noticed awhile back that candy bars got smaller. Boxes and bags are not as full of food items, and the net weight is lower than a few years ago. But who reads the package details. Hard to pull this off with a gallon of milk, or a dozen eggs. But the new "elegant" whipped yogurts, the "mini-size" candies, are examples of a second and secret inflation going on that they hope we don't really notice, and perhaps we don't remember our math class covering calculation of volumes. Or advertising wows us into thinking it's cooler to have our food available in these new modern ways. My own personal pet peeve is Saltine crackers. When I was young, I remember tiny holes in the crackers that are necessary in the baking process. Have you noticed the size of the holes now? You could pass a knitting needle through them. Who bothers to track net weight? And I've looked at several brands of crackers. They've all followed suit. Hidden secondary inflation. I'm sure it's applicable to many more items in hardware, business supplies, on and on.
