My wife worked for a time as a food stamp examiner. If she was suspicious about eligibility, she had to make a house visit. Sure enough, they had separate facilities labeled: "These dishes are mine, those are hers" etc. To make sure their eligibility wasn't ruined by the total of their joint income. She had to approve: no choice, they met the requirements. Some applicants had a much higher annual income than I did as a full time federal employee. In the off season, their income dropped to zero, which made them eligible according to the rules. We didn't laugh when the people in front of us had two grocery carts, one with steak and the other with beer. We had to raid our savings account to buy hamburger, and no beer. Guess which cart they paid for with food stamps. Not funny, I know. It is now, though, for me. Har de har har har!
