Is the PEW poll good enough for you? (Only Six Percent Of Scientists Are Republicans)

The PEW poll may well be flawed. The population polled was drawn from the membership list of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The AAAS is generally seen as a liberal organization with stated goals such as “Increase diversity in the scientific community,” and “Use science to advance human rights”. Many of its members come from an academic or public sector setting which is not conducive to being conservative. One would have to consider whether or not scientists working in the private sector are as likely to be members of a left leaning organization like the AAAS.

The AAAS uncritically accepts the IPCC on climate change issues and favours climate policy responses demanding international governance regimes, large-scale social engineering, and the redistribution of wealth. It is likely that the more conservative scientists will not be members of an organization that does not reflect their views.

About the Scientist Survey

Results for the scientist survey are based on 2,533 online interviews conducted from May 1 to June 14, 2009 with members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), under the direction of Princeton Survey Research Associates International. A sample of 9,998 members was drawn from the AAAS membership list excluding those who were not based in the United States or whose membership type identified them as primary or secondary-level educators.
