Despite the raw sewage overflows with heavy rain, the Hudson is cleaner now than in the last 50 years....the chief problem remains large corp waste (PCB"s) dumped by GE. The river has been essentially closed to fishing for about 40 years unless the fish are of a type to head out sea and only return to spawn..ie shad...
After decades of stalling the courts, GE finally began to dredge last year, but more court fights will happen.
Despite the PCBs the river is quite clean now and many species of fish have returned. Boating, swimming, and fishing are very popular though there is an advisory about how much fish should be consumed from the river.

And NYC drinking water is considered to be among the very best in the world......
