Koan is: "Curious and open on one hand. And wildly intolerant on the other of those whom you perceive to be antithetical to your views. How does this combination exist? (It's a rhetorical question.) >>

It has been a hard problem to figure out. Here is the problem as I see it. History is replete with terrible behavior by the human species. In the last century alone we had Nazi Germany, Stalin, Pol Pot and even the Japanese army which was very cruel.

We also had people who would deny women their civil rights, pervasive racism, brutal black chain gangs, child sweatshops and on and on.

My wonderful mother taught me those things were not to be tolerated and she was right. Eldridge Cleaver said: "if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem".

So I am often not sure even how to act or what to do. If I had been in the segregated south in the 30's/40's/50's how should I have behaved?

My sweet daughter told me she does not pay as much attention to what people say, as to what they do. Sage advice.

Still, I have always felt very strongly, I have an obligation to fight for a humane society. It is not always clear how to do that?

Look at the rise of Hitler. History has said he was able to do it because too many people kept quiet about it.

So what looks like intolerance to you is really my struggling to figure out how to help my fellow human. Today we see massive poverty and income inequality in this country and a Republcian party intent on keeping it that way.

So it seems to me we must fight the Republicans with every bit of strength we can muster.
