Whether it's PDF's, scans, or high resolution photos, the optimum way to capture these pages (are there many?, is it bound?, etc.), and the best reproduction is going to come from the pages being as flat as possible. And that means destroying the original.

Now that's optimum. However copying the pages with a GOOD camera can work.

Ultimately you want to have digital files to print.
