The bill by Stanishev, who when in government from 2005 to 2009 presided over a policy generally in favour of Russian energy projects but also had to lead the country through the natural gas cutoff in January 2009 that resulted from a financial dispute between Russia and Ukraine, proposes a ban on exploration for and production of shale gas.

Bills also have been proposed by Volen Siderov, leader of the ultra-nationalist Ataka party, and Yane Yanev, leader of the Order Law and Justice party.

Siderov’s bill proposes a moratorium on exploration and production of shale gas while Yanev’s wants a ban on hydraulic fracturing, popularly known as fracking.

The special meeting of the committee came two days after a protest in capital city Sofia and 11 other cities in Bulgaria against shale gas exploration and extraction. Organisers of the protest met Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva and representatives of ruling party GERB, saying afterwards that there was ruling party support for halting shale gas projects.
