I think my celebration of good food and drink is reminiscent of animals savoring their food and drink. As such, it predates human religion.

Our kind's religious impulse, imo, was a way to keep us from going insane when the unknown happened to us. As we know from psychological studies, nothing drives a creature crazier than sh*t happening randomly- so to explain all the "random" things- like eclipses, typhoons, earthquakes and the like- our kind dreamed up religion. Need to explain why mom suddenly got black swellings under her arms and dropped dead? Need to explain that odd reddish tinged sea water? Religion has answers. Not the correct answers, of course- but who cares? At the time the religions were whipped up no one had the correct answers. Now we do. We can't answer all of life's pesky little questions- but we can answer a lot of them.
