When push comes to shove, I wonder if GLD and other gold holdings will be subject to forfeiture in the public interest. Anyone holding gold obviously has a surplus of wealth they can afford to stash for the future. So in good democratic process, it would make sense to pass a law that gold in amorphous form becomes state property for the issue of new currency. Anyone holding or concealing such gold would become taxable at 100% and punished as tax evaders if not declaring their holdings. Those complying would be issued 10% face value of the new currency.
