China Stocks Soar 4%

China’s shares surged after the latest economic data suggests the country’s economy is still far from a “hard-landing” scenario.

The Shanghai Composite Index climbed 4% to 2294.29, after a brief choppy period when the market pared some earlier gains as investors digested the GDP data.

China’s economy rose 8.9% in the fourth quarter versus an 8.6% rise tipped in a Dow Jones poll.

“We expect that (China’s) growth will moderate further in 2012, but also that this slowdown will remain relatively steady,” says Royal Bank of Canada economist Brian Jackson in a note.urc

Metal companies are leading the broader market’s gain on the stronger-than-expected data.
