My post was in response to the point Caxton tried to make; That Ericsson phones are so bad that Ericsson has to give them away.

I believe it is a common practice for the cellular provider to offer the phone at a deep discount provided that the purchaser agrees to use
the provider's services for a period of time. I bought my wife a Motorola phone for $50 from our local provider a couple of years ago (Ericsson was not available in my area at the time) but had to agree to use the provider's services for one year.

The $500 figure for the lowest priced Ericsson phone comes from an article in a Stockholm daily paper which compared a number of mobile telephones a la Consumer's Report. They rated the Ericsson phone second to one made by Nokia. The $500 probably is the true price although it sounds awfully high.
