I would disagree with the author. What is interesting to me is that in a quarter where you had pent up demand of a new iphone, a new iphone carrier, and when everyone was waiting on Android 4.0 ICS (Android 4.0 ICS and Galaxy Nexus hit Verizon in Q4 in mid December - zero phones on AT&T, Sprint or Tmobile as far as 4.0 ICS in Q4 - so there is a lot of waiting not unlike the waiting of the horrible Q3 Apple's numbers for the iPhone4S in Q4). Yet Android still outsold the iPhone and Apple's iPhone still failed to catch Android in it's own back yard - the biggest Apple market, the US (Android still outsells all the iPhone3Gs,4 and 4S even thought there is a free iPhone in that list). Remember, the figures from Nielsen were for US only. When the global figures come out for Q4, IMO, Android would have increased its lead from iOS. Unlike the US, in the rest of the world Apple is failing badly in market share compared to Android.

And here is another view on the Nielsen's numbers...

No, Apple isn't 'closing in' on Android

In those numbers, Android was at 42.8 percent and Apple was at 28.3 percent of the overall smartphone market. In the new quarter-four numbers, Android is at 46.3 percent while Apple is at 30 percent. Data from ComScore, another independent metrics company, shows a similar scenario.

So did Apple grow in overall smartphone market share from the third to fourth quarter? Sure. But so did Android. And Android grew quite a bit more, gauging by Nielsen's measurements -- twice as much, with a total share increase of 3.5 points compared to Apple's 1.7. Despite the boost in iPhone sales following the launch of the iPhone 4S, the gap between the two platforms has actually continued to widen.

Damn facts. Always getting in the way of a good story.
