I had a cat named Spike in the early 90s, and he was one of the best cats ever. He liked to ride in the car, and when you opened a car door he would jump right in. On several occasions when visitors to our home left their car windows open, Spike would jump in and fall asleep on the back seat. Then when the visitor drove away, the cat would wake up, and hop up onto the ledge to look out the window, scaring the living crap out of the visitor.

We took him for walks in the neighborhood.

It is true that outdoor cats don't live as long as indoor cats. The number one cause of death is being hit by cars. Spike was happy running around on the 8 acre shorefront property we lived on at that time. On July 4th, as we headed out to a party, I considered putting him in the house, but didn't.

The next morning we found him on the lawn, dead, a couple of feet from the road, without a scratch. He was only two years old. I still miss him.
