Sorry for the use of CEV without an explanation. CEV's are Controlled
environment vaults. They are manholes with lights, tilted floors, and heat after spending 15 years in the other kind of manholes these make you think you have died and gone to telephone heaven. They are used to house fiber mux equipment. In Illinois we have a mixture of AT&T Slc 96 and DSC Litespan 2000 with a little Fujitsu for the Digital loop carrier and have a mixture of Nortel FMT 150/300, Alactel 1603, and Fujitsu FLM 150 for the Fiber mux equipment.

Just as a side note, was just trained on AFC's UMC-1000 it uses Pairgain HDSL technology for the DS1 transport built right inside the cabinet. The UMC-1000 is the 3rd generation digital loop carrier that has been appoved for use in Ameritech and we will start deployment
in Northern Illinois soon. What has struck me funny was the article in this weeks Telephony that stated 3-Comm and AFC were trailing a ADSL modem that will work through AFC 3 rd generation Digital loop carrier
UMC-1000, Hummm? But then again we are using Westel ADSL modems for the Wheaton Ill trail but have a contract with Alactel to buy theirs for deployment. Just goes to show you can't read to much into anything the boys up at the top are sharp and are not going to tip their hand before they are ready to.
