Nokia (NOK) Lumia 800 Selling 'Like' Apple's (AAPL) iPhone in Denmark
1:27 pm ET 01/24/2012 - Street Insider
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is looking like Hamlet right now...without much of the tragedy.

According to reports from Denmark's largest telecom company, TDC, -- and cited by WMPowerUser and mobilsiden.dk, the latter being 100 percent in Danish -- sales of Nokia's latest offering, the Lumia 800, are seeing demand akin to that of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 4S.

Wait, did we read that right? (Let's see...carry the 1...divide by the reciprocal...) well, it looks like that's correct.

Following launch of the device on January 20th in Denmark, one TDC rep said Nokia's Lumia 800 has sold as many as three-times the number of its next closest rival. Further, just about 33 percent of customers have opted for the pink or blue variety, rather than simple black.

Another carrier, Telia, said the Lumia is being bested only by the iPhone 4S. The rep from Telia expects demand to take off soon.

Finally, a check by WMPowerUser with Denmark's carrier '3' reveals that there wasn't iPhone 4S "hype," but response has been similar to that of iPhone. User have said the Lumia 800 is both "highly usable" and a "good design."

So there you have it. Whether Nokia will experience the same reaction in the U.S. and other countries is yet to be seen. One factor potentially pushing sales is desire for variety, and the dominance of Apple and Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android might be whetting appetites for the Lumia 710 and 800, which both run on Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone platform.

And Finland, too, where Nokia was previously reported to be having a tough time.

Nokia is expected to release fourth-quarter results on Thursday. Shares are down about 7 percent today.
