For the carriers who sell the iPhone, the question is more complex, as the results from Verizon Communications VZ -1.90% demonstrated on Tuesday morning. The telecommunications giant reported adding 1.2 million of the most lucrative post-paid wireless subscribers in the fourth quarter. It also activated about 4.3 million iPhones for the period – indicating that the majority of customers the device attracts are not new to Verizon, but rather upgrades of existing customers.
