What in the world is going on.? Does anyone really know? If it was the wrong action for the japanese to take why is it the correct thing for us to do now.

Those are very good questions. I wish I knew the answers. The only guess I have is the very mundane and commonsensical one that they are terrified of lapsing into a depression (a recession times two; yes, things are bad now but they could be even worse!), and are trying to jump start the economy with the low rates. Housing is weak now, imagine what it would be if mortgage rates were higher! They have to get housing moving again, that will do more than anything to create jobs that Americans can actually do and can't be exported. Getting it started is easier said than done with the foreclosure overhangs.
