(By the way, I was wrong about the amount. In 2009, the CBO was projecting a 2012 deficit of $600B, not $700B. But who cares about an extra $100B when it comes to partisan politics?)

Latest estimates from August 2011 show deficits dramatically falling until 2014:

But even those estimates have to be pushed out by a year, given that the projected deficit for 2012 is already well above the CBO's August 2011 report.

Bottom line is that the CBO estimates are an idiot check. Only an idiot would believe that the CBO figures are anything more than overly optimistic projections with a government seal of approval.
