Just heard on NPR (Diane Rehm show) that George Romney was paying a 44% tax rate, according to the tax returns he made public in the 1960s. Not sure if that was the marginal rate or the effective rate, will have to check the transcript when it comes out later.

The speaker said a comparison between father and son's tax rates is a good proxy for what has happened to taxes over the past 50 years since the 1960s.

Were we better off in the 1960s or today?
