You're the one who brought up the comparison between PCs and the Volt. Now you want to run away from the analogy?

By the way, you should know the history of Intel and IBM better than I do, so I shouldn't have to remind you about Intel's exit from memory in 1985. That was associated with a ton of layoffs at the time.

But hey, like you said, none of these companies were in danger of becoming bankrupt. Maybe that should tell you something about GM and Chrysler, why they went bankrupt, and why they were resuscitated. It certainly wasn't because the Volt is supposedly going to be a revolutionary new technology like the PC was in the 80's or the smartphone was in the past decade.
