I think it's a good thing. The companies behaved badly, and the employees should be compensated. Sadly, in these cases usually only the lawyers receive a meaningful amount of money.
I'm even willing to admit Steve Jobs was, personally, the instigator, though I won't concede he had the ability to make deals all by himself. Any CEO who signed on to the deal is a culpable as any other.
Steve Jobs is now dead, however. I think we should have a trial to find out the real facts. Were employees not hired even when they had contacted other potential employers on their own, or was this just about recruitment. If the latter, the affect on wages would not be as great.
Once the facts have been determined and a settlement is reached, there will be much less chance of this happening in Silicon Valley or elsewhere in the future.
By the way, wages in the Silicon Valley area would be envied by workers in most parts of the country. |
