They have done what the right-wing economists told them to do and moved out of the way

Nice fantasy.

They have a national top tax rate of 50%. They have the National Health Service. They (like the US) have an over-regulated economy. They haven't been austere, they have been spending tons of money. They have done anything but get out of the way.

Also they are in Europe and trade mostly with Europe, and have financial exposure to the softest parts of Europe. None of these have to do with either activist or non-interventionist government, but they are reasons for the UK's economic difficulties.
