Apple is so big and powerful now that people forget how things were in 2007, when those emails were written.

The company's revenue for that year was 24 billion dollars, and net income was 3.5 billion. They were not a behemoth running the show in Silicon Valley. Sure, Steve Jobs had influence, but Schmidt could have said no to him. He didn't say know because he felt the arrangement would work for him, too. And there's nothing in those emails to suggest that the agreement refers to anything other than active recruiting.

But the tankers have made up their minds, and there's no point at all in engaging about it.
