Well, I don't think the "Ryan Plan" encompassed ONLY social engineering but there was certainly an element of it and Gingrich was addressing that element. That isn't to say Ryan's plan is bad, or wasn't better than anything anyone else had come up with. But the comment was taken out of context by the media: It is pretty hard to argue rationally with anything Gingrich said in that interview.

The idea of getting some kind of consensus behind whatever radical changes occur isn't a mere talking point. I can't speak for you, but the outrage I felt after Obamacare was rammed through against the will of the people was (and still is) palpable. I felt and feel violated by the political process.

The idea that someone supports some kind of consensus building approach to these changes isn't hollow. Gingrich has a record of doing just that and the country, with all its problems, is far better off for it. He had to play hardball, but the end was able to turn Clinton around on important issues like the ever-expanding welfare state and moving from a policy of tax increases to tax cuts.

What part of Gingrich's accomplishments, exactly, do you take issue with?
