Exactly.

But there is an inherent unfairness and misrepresentation in including the payroll tax (SS/MC) in the computation. After all, these are supposed to be "lockbox" items that, by statute, only apply to earned income. This is what really pisses me about this argument -- as we're now commingling these taxes on earned income with taxes on unearned income, which is a slippery slope to extending these taxes to all income.

It is a way for supporters of big government to avoid the central issue: that Medicare and SS are both failed programs that cannot possibly continue without levying totally new taxes -- something FDR himself would NEVER have supported.

And as of now, the liberals are winning this argument. In politics, if you're explaining you're losing -- and there is simply no way to address this issue without explaining it.
