Reagan was portrayed as stupid but likeable. Reagan problem when he was behind in the polls was never that he wasn't liked, it was that he wasn't trusted. The meme against him was would you trust Reagan with the nuclear football. Newt problem is that he is perceived as just the opposite: smart but not likeable.
