I agree with you. Highlight their policies. Mock their leaders. But focusing on "Joe Schmo" a moron on SI flapping his gums in cyber space doesn't do anything but make Joe feel like a Big Man. And we want Joe to feel like the little weenie he is.

I'm not sure why you think it's such a big deal you can't talk about the little people on SI. They are meaningless. Talk about the policies they espouse- that makes sense. Talk about the inconsistancies of their positions, generally. I don't care what you say about public figures, or policies. That seems like a lot of freedom to me.
