I think the problem Evangelicals have with Mormons is not that they proselytize, nor their style of doing so. I'd say it has more to do with the fact that the Mormons claim to have received their books directly from an angel in upstate New York in the 1830s, which books the Mormons consider to be holy scripture on an equal footing with the Old and New Testaments.

Evangelicals consider those beliefs to be outside the scope of Christianity, if not actually heretical.

Mormons consider themselves Christians. It is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, after all. But members of some other Christian denominations don't consider them such.
