The thing I always remind myself about religious folks, is that many, if not most, are really very good people who believe church is the path to goodness. That the more religious they are the better the world will be. They are trying to do good and just don't know a better way. Especially old uneducated poor women. They are usually very kind. So, they just simply don't know any better, for myriad reasons. I always try to be gentle with them and never discuss religion with them. It is the same with good people who just don't understand sophisticated thinking. Gay marriage is a perfect example of a subjecct that can be perplexing to the uneducated person. Most conservatives are perplexed by a simple liberal. They have little understsnding of what liberals are talking about; and it often frustrates them as they cannot counter liberal arguments. <<me too And they worry me a little I can't decide if 1. they are just cluelessly brainwashed or 2. maybe they are really evil, and there are some people that need imaginary scary fellows in the sky to keep them good
