I would describe it as OBFUSCATING, not 'backpedaling'.

Obfuscating, trying to throw up a smoke screen to confuse people about what has been said, and by whom, is the tactic I've noticed him resorting to more often in situations such as this. It's likely a face-saving measure.

He never actually retreats in public when called out on obviously lunatic or factually incorrect postings... but most commonly he attempts to cloud the debate, confuse folks about what was actually written, drags in red herrings and rolls out smokescreens... whatever he thinks might work to deflect attention from an obvious falsehood that has been found out, or a strident racialist diatribe that comes to be seen (even in this company <g>) as too obvious, not subtle enough, too much over-the-top to be effective.
