Quite frankly, I don't think it gets the Romneys off the hook but it softens the story ever so slightly. The large problem is that only Mormons could attend the wedding. It's of a piece with another Rich point, that the Mormon Church didn't integrate at certain levels until 10 years after MLK's death.
