I am a poor one to speak for the Mormon Church as most my of knowledge has been gained in/by casual acquaintance with Mormons (which has been very positive by the way), but the sacredness of the Temple(s) is a key component of their Religion and is used for their equivalent of sacramental purposes for consecrating key life events.

There are only a very limited number of Mormon Temples in the US (as opposed to numerous "Churches") and Mormons desire to be married in one (though it is not necessary to be) as it connotes devotion and faithfulness to their spiritual way.

Apologies to any Mormons lurking if I haven't got it quite right.
