I think where one lives affects what one thinks is the "middle."

If you live in MA or CA or NY, it's easy to think the "middle" is fairly liberal and conservatives are a marginal bunch of extremists.

But the "middle" in these kind of states doesn't matter. What counts is what is the "middle" in states that Obama carried in 2008 that we can reasonably hope to swing to the Republican side in 2012:

FL, NC, VA, OH, IN, NV, CO, NM.
