My background is in statistics. When a highly respected PEW research poll says 51% of scientist's call themselves liberals, 80% lean Democratic, and only 6% call themselves Repblican's indicates something substantive is at play here. What are the variables involved?

I think it is clear why scientist's are primarily liberal. The Republican party is the party of the religious community, by and large. And they weave their religious beliefs in their politics constantly whch is why we lag behind other western democracies e.g. anti abortion and even anti contraception, Bush not allowing stem cell research, wanting to teach creationism and having over 50% not believing in evolution or global warming.

The scientific community is more secular humanists, and trained in facts and logic, so there is no place for them in the Republican party e.g. every scientist knows evolution is real, so how can they embrace things like creationism or reject evolution or gobal warming?

The Democrats believe in all of that.
