I am an elected official in our township. The belt tightening that we have been doing has been unprecedented -- even down to selling office equipment that is not considered essential. We have not raised real estate taxes in six years, nor has the county. The difficulty as far as our township real estate taxes arises, in large part, with the police department health insurance, pension plans, etc. And when we resort to binding arbitration, there isn't much relief.

In addition to that, the school district real estate taxes, over which we obviously have no control, have increased every year for the past twenty, due in large part to teacher contracts and unfunded state and federal mandates.

It is difficult for fiscally responsible townships/cities/boroughs to explain to their residents that much of what is seen as excessive spending is actually a form of mandated spending, as a result of unions and government regulation.
