The charter school solution is to discard the most challenging students. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you take out the worst performing students then test results will improve. The fact is public education is also being assaulted from above by bureaucrats. I was talking to a teacher friend on mine yesterday and she was telling me of a teacher who's students always performed way above grade level, but now is being forced to change his style of teaching because of some misdirected desire for uniformity in curriculum.

I read a brilliant book about this a few years back, John Taylor Gatto's The Underground History of American Education. Very good book if you want to be informed about what has transpired in public education.
