Ellen, although there is some ramp up time involved with switching
out programmers it isn't impossible or even difficult. Most of the recent
advances in software development have improved this situation
greatly.

For exmaple, in the day of assembly language programming it was
well nigh impossible to get someone on line and productive if they
weren't involved with the product from the beginning. Today with
things like C++ and java we are in a different world. I came on to a
new project 2 months ago that has been running for almost 7 months.
With no prior knowledge of the project I have been productively working
on some pretty core pieces now for 6 of the 8 weeks.

Of course a programmer who wrote the code himself might have been
faster because he knew it better, but it is getting easier and easier for
someone else to step in and pick things up... especially with coding
standards and such that are becoming prevelant in the industry.
