In advance of the seasonal spring hike in gasoline prices, the fuel economy of new vehicles sold in the U.S. last month was at a record high, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Average fuel economy of cars, light trucks, minivans and SUVs purchased in January was 23.0 m.p.g., which ties the all-time monthly record set in March 2011.
