Addi, Shane and others:
Reiterating what appeared in the article provided by Shane, there was a recent
article in the Korean Herald (newspaper) stating that Samsung was one of the three largest Korean (non-bank ) borrowers of foreign debt. IAW this article Samsung was reporting very large losses on this foreign
debt. I believe (based on numerous articles in the Korean Herald) that
South Korea has been so slow in approaching the IMF for assistance in
part because the IMF will impose limitations on the types of loans
the Korean banks can make. If Samsung is losing money on specific types of chips the IMF might restrict the Korean banks from making new
loans to build fabs to manufacture the same types of chips. Historically, South Korea has placed the highest priority on growth in revenues in lieu of focusing on profitability. Having said this I think that the company most affected will be MICRON and not LSI. Comments ?
