If your arguing that its ok to force people to pay for something that isn't vital...

That's something else again. One concept at a time...

If society consider (for example) slavery to be moral, that doesn't make it so.

Slavery was abolished when a critical mass of people decided that it was immoral. Before that it was moral. There is no absolute arbiter of moral, not on this earth in this lifetime, that is. Is a bikini immoral? How about removing a headscarf? It's all cultural.
