You can read about IEEE 1394 in news.com .
I'm not a computer specialist. IMHO, IEEE 1394 is about how motherboard interacts with the outside world. I2O is about how the job shared within motherboard. they are not competitors. If anything, implementation of IEEE 1394 will greatly increase need in fast I/O systems (I2O) for personal computers and contributing to the "snowball effect" mentioned by Jerry Fiddler in techweb.com
