Ukiah corpsmembers are exposed to a variety of outdoor work projects offering them diverse work experience and skill knowledge. There is something for everyone including trail rehabilitation and construction, landscaping and native planting, erosion control, carpentry and construction, fire hazard reduction, salmon habitat restoration and stream bank enhancement. These projects typically occur within southern Mendocino, Lake and Sonoma counties. Some projects not within a reasonable commuting time are called “spikes” where the crew stays near the work project in available housing or tents.
Ukiah has long established relationships with federal, state, local agencies and other public entities to conduct the natural resource projects throughout the year. Such partnerships include Ukiah Valley Trail Group, Ukiah Fire Safe Council, Mendocino Redwood Company, California State Parks, the Department of Fish and Game, Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Salmon restoration work in area streams
Salmon habitat restoration otherwise known as SRP (Salmon Restoration Program) has been a mainstay of Ukiah project work for many years. Annually all corpsmembers are trained by proficient staff and our Fish Habitat Specialist for project work conducted from July until October. Corpsmembers work in the streams creating habitat from large downed logs and rock for seasonal salmonid spawning.
Type II Wildland Firefighting Crew
Beginning in 2010, a fire crew was established in a joint venture with the U.S. Forest Service. Corpsmembers are Red Card-certified through rigorous coursework and a timed four-mile pack test wearing 45-pound vests. The fire crew is accompanied by a USFS Crew Boss and three seasoned firefighters to respond to wildland fires that erupt throughout the state. Fire crew members participate in a Fire Conditioning Class to prepare themselves physically for the demands of firefighting as well as training days with Forest Service personnel.

Building Construction and Carpentry Trades
 
Ukiah staff are credentialed instructors for the Regional Occupation Program in Construction Technology, providing instruction to select corpsmembers. All of the recent construction at the Ukiah Center has been completed by these corpsmembers and ongoing facility maintenance is provided by them daily. Corpsmembers learn how to use a variety of construction tools and woodworking equipment in the fully equipped shop. They learn the fundamentals of plumbing, electrical, rough and finish carpentry.
