A change in consensus of societies values is far more than just precedent.

For a culture, a precedent is another brick in the wall. That brick would not have been placed were there not already some momentum towards it. And placing that brick adds further momentum.

An individual's view is partially independent of any cultural change. He can always stick to his guns. But he can be influenced, as well. You'll notice that the young and the old hold different values on many things. As the old ones die off, their entrenched values are replaced. Pretty soon we'll have widespread gay marriage for that reason. Young people just don't see it the same way as old people.
